Surf Coaching & Levels
What surf level do I need to be to join Tailslide?
Tailslide welcomes surfers at every stage, from total beginners who have never set foot on a board to advanced surfers pushing performance. Before you arrive, we send you a 4-question Level Map to place you precisely so that every coaching session is matched to exactly where you are, not where we assume you are.
How many surfers are there in each coaching session?
We keep it intimate, with just 2 to 3 surfers per coach. This means every session includes real-time feedback, personalised drills, and direct attention from your coach. You will never be lost in a large group or left waiting on the sidelines for your turn.
Do I need to bring my own surfboard?
No. We provide a curated quiver: soft-tops for first-timers, funboards for progression, and performance shortboards for experienced surfers, plus leashes, fins, wax, and rashguards. If you bring your own board, we will help tune your setup to Madiha’s reef so you can get the most out of it.
Is surfing at Madiha's reef safe for beginners?
Yes. Madiha’s beginner break is located just steps from the surf house and offers forgiving whitewater over a shallow reef. Our coaches provide close in-water guidance at all times, and you will always be matched to a wave that suits your level. Because you practice real takeoffs and positioning from day one, progression here is often faster than on flat sandy beach breaks.
Do I need to know how to swim before I can take surf lessons?
Yes. You need to be a confident, independent swimmer to participate in surf coaching at Tailslide. You do not need to be an exceptional swimmer, but you should be comfortable in open water and able to look after yourself if separated from your board. Please disclose any relevant health conditions or water-safety concerns when you book.
What language are surf lessons taught in?
All coaching sessions are taught in English. Our coaches are fluent, clear communicators trained to explain technique in simple, practical terms that work across all language backgrounds. Non-English speakers who understand conversational English have had no difficulty following sessions.
The Retreat & Booking
What is the minimum stay at Tailslide Surf House?
The minimum stay is 3 nights, which includes 3 surf lessons, 3 breakfasts, a surfboard and rashguard, 3 theory classes, and a video analysis session. We recommend staying 7 to 10 days to see meaningful progress in your surfing.
How long should I stay to see progress in surfing?
Progress compounds with time. In just a week you will feel meaningful shifts, but real breakthroughs in timing, paddling, and turns happen over 2 to 4 weeks of daily coaching and rest. To support longer stays, we offer 10% off bookings of 14 days or more, so lasting surf progression becomes possible.
Can I come to Tailslide if my partner does not surf?
Absolutely. Non-surfing guests are very welcome. They enjoy the same accommodation, meals, and retreat atmosphere, just without the surf coaching component. Non-surfers stay at a 30% reduced rate. There is also a full range of optional activities, including whale watching, snorkelling, cultural tours, and more, so every day has something worth doing.
How do I book, and what deposit is required?
You can book directly through the Tailslide booking system at tailslide.bookinglayer.com. A 20% non-refundable deposit is required to confirm your reservation. The remaining balance is payable on arrival. Your booking is only confirmed once the deposit has been received.
What is the cancellation policy?
Deposits are non-refundable. If you cancel more than 30 days before arrival, your deposit can be transferred to a future booking within 12 months. Cancellations within 30 days of arrival forfeit the deposit. Cancellations within 5 days of arrival may incur the full balance. All cancellations must be submitted in writing by email. In cases of force majeure such as flight cancellations or government restrictions, Tailslide will do its best to reschedule at no extra cost.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. All guests are required to hold valid travel insurance that covers surfing, water sports, medical emergencies, and trip cancellations. Proof of insurance may be requested at check-in. Tailslide also offers an optional cancellation insurance add-on at EUR 65 per person, which allows you to cancel for any reason up to check-in day. This must be booked at the time of reservation.
